Well Visits Q & A

Why are well visits important?

Consistent checkups throughout childhood and adolescence help ensure that your child is growing and developing normally. They also provide an avenue for addressing concerns immediately, when it’s easiest to treat a problem such as poor growth, scoliosis, ADHD, or other health issues.

The healthcare experts at All About Children Pediatrics use routine checkups to review your child’s:

  • Growth
  • Immunizations
  • Physical development and milestones
  • Vision and hearing

Routine checkups can also develop healthy habits in your children since the impact of nutrition, the importance of physical activity, and other preventive measures are discussed with you and your children as they mature. Visiting regularly can also help your child become comfortable about seeking medical care.

How often should my child have a well visit?

During the early stages, from birth through about 6 months, you can expect your pediatrician to recommend at least bi-monthly well-child visits. These visits become less frequent as your child moves through infancy into toddlerhood. From 6-18 months, the visits will be 3 months apart and then from 18-36 months they will be every 6 months. Once your child has reached 36 months, routine checkups typically become an annual event.

Should my older child see a pediatrician every year?

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children see a pediatrician for a routine checkup every year, even throughout adolescence. This enables your doctor to continue tracking your child’s growth and development and often helps prevent minor health issues from becoming major problems.

High blood, elevated cholesterol, and other medical issues often thought to be adult concerns can affect teenagers as well. A routine exam gives you, your child, and your pediatrician the opportunity to discuss overall health issues that may indicate reasons for further testing.

Children change and grow rapidly from the moment of birth. Regular visits with your pediatrician give you a chance to discuss developmental milestones, safety issues, and your concerns about upcoming developmental phases, such as what to expect from your child during puberty.

Whether you’re a mom-to-be seeking a pediatric team to support your newborn’s health and well-being or a parent with all ages and stages of kids at home, you can rely on the expertise of the healthcare professionals at All About Children Pediatrics.
