Newborn Care Q & A

What is newborn care?

Newborn care is medical care a new baby receives right after birth through the first month or two of their life. Newborns have unique healthcare needs, and proper medical care helps prevent them from becoming sick. It can also detect diseases or illnesses early before serious complications develop.

What happens right after delivery?

Prior to newborn care with the pediatric team at All About Children Pediatrics, you can meet with pediatricians during a complimentary consultation. They get a call when you’re getting ready to deliver your baby.

Within a few hours after delivering your baby, your All About Children Pediatrics provider can evaluate your newborn to ensure they are healthy. For example, your newborn’s pediatrician may:

  • Check their length, weight, and head circumference
  • Complete newborn screening tests
  • Evaluate their hearing
  • Check your baby’s breathing, reflexes, heart rate, skin color, and muscle tone
  • Administer vitamin K injections
  • Offer a hepatitis B vaccine
  • Administer eye drops
  • Screen for congenital heart diseases

If your pediatrician detects a medical concern, they might recommend additional diagnostic testing or treatments to keep your baby healthy and help them thrive.

They answer questions you may have and discuss feeding, diaper changes, breastfeeding, sleeping, bathing, and umbilical cord care with you.

When should I schedule newborn care appointments?

Newborns require more frequent doctor’s visits than older babies and children to ensure they stay healthy and grow and develop normally.

After your newborn’s initial assessment your pediatrician likes to see them in the office a few days after being discharged from the hospital, again a few weeks later, and at one month and two months of age. They might recommend additional visits if your baby is losing weight or shows signs of medical issues.

During follow-up newborn care visits, your doctor again weighs your newborn, evaluates their growth and development, completes a comprehensive physical exam, and offers vaccines.
