Find out the best way to treat your little one’s sports injuries.Sports injuries

Sure, no one wants to see their child get hurt while on the field. Unfortunately, according to the CDC, about 3.5 million kids under the age of 14 require medical attention for sports injuries every year. That certainly is a lot of kids! Don’t get us wrong; our Eden Prairie, MN, pediatricians love getting to know your children, but they certainly don’t like to do it under these circumstances. Discover the many ways you can help your child manage their sport injury-related pain and symptoms.

While injuries run the gamut from minor bruising to more serious conditions like concussions, most sports-related injuries tend to fall between the minor and the severe. In most cases, athletic children are often faced with musculoskeletal injuries.

Strains and Sprains

Our Eden Prairie children’s doctors see a lot of sprains, which means that the muscles or tendons have been stretched too far or have even been torn. A sprain occurs when tissues that support a joint (known as ligaments) have been stretched or torn. When your child comes into our office we will run imaging tests to determine the extent of the damage to decide whether it’s a strain or a sprain.

Stress Fractures

Stress fractures also show up gradually as a result of performing the same repetitive movements regularly. Stress fractures may also show up if the muscles or tendons have been overworked.

Treatment for Sports-Related Injuries

More often than not the RICE method is a great way to facilitate healing and ease your child’s symptoms. The extent of the strain or sprain will determine just how long it will take to heal, but it often can take a few weeks for everything to feel normal again.

RICE stands for rest, icing, compression, and elevation, and it’s a standard treatment method for handling minor musculoskeletal injuries. Children should avoid playing sports or being involved in any activities that could make the injury worse. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications can also temporarily ease pain and swelling.
